The Happiness Index and Ten Thankless Years is the latest offering from unique “neuro-delightful”comedy duo Jonny and the Baptists. This show is a quirky and delightfully random blend of satirical humour and catchy tunes that left us roaring with laughter from start to finish. Their ability to seamlessly combine social commentary with entertaining and comedic musical numbers is refreshing and hilariously funny.

‘The Happiness Index’ is a performance that tackles the elusive nature of happiness in modern society. With deeply political undertones, the brains behind the duo, Paddy Gervers and Jonny Donahoe explore why they are unhappy by poking fun at societal norms, political climates and their personal struggles with depression. Each section of this show focuses on a tory prime minister to hilarious effect even touching on the short lived reign of Liz Truss who “burned bright like a moth on fire!” Their sharp wit and clever lyrics are matched by their musical prowess, delivering songs that are as musically impressive as they are hilarious. The shows title, is a nod to the happiness index used by some in government to measure the happiness of the people and sets the stage for a series of comedically savage yet insightful examinations of the conservative government and modern life.

The performance of ‘Ten Thankless Years’ marks a reflective milestone, celebrating a decade of their work together (“since 2010!”) In a clever mix of self-deprecating humour and genuine gratitude for both each other and their audiences, this show had a different tone to the first. Demonstrating their irresistible comedic genius, boundless wit and camaraderie, this show ploughs through their greatest hits and new material and reflects on the ups and downs they have faced throughout their professional and personal relationship. The chemistry between these two is palpable and I think everyone needs someone in their life that looks at them like Paddy looks at Jonny throughout this show! The rawness and honesty these two bring to the stage is both refreshing and exciting, you never quite know what they are going to do next, but there is a sense that whatever it is its going to be wild, chaotic and uproarious.

The duo’s ability to handle both the personal and serious topics with a lighthearted touch is a standout feature of both shows, and it is perhaps this lightheartedness and deep respect for each other that goes a long way in endearing each of them to their audience. They clearly excel in creating a sense of community amongst the audience, with their performances feeling both inclusive and intimate, almost as if you are enjoying a gathering with close friends. The warmth they exude on stage resonates and truly makes this show a memorable musical marvel.

Overall, the show is a stunning example of talent and creativity, striking a perfect balance between social critique and humour. The duo deliver a performance that is both entertaining and enlightening and won’t fail to leave you roaring with laughter, feeling uplifted and fulfilled by a night of perfect comedy and catchy, memorable tunes. For anyone who enjoys smart, witty and satirical comedy mixed with musical performance, Jonny and the Baptists are a must see! I can’t wait to see another show by Jonny and the Baptists and know I am going to be a lifelong fan of their random, raucous and musical comedic brilliance!
